About surfing in Southern Atolls:
Surfers are constantly reminded of the location of Huvadhoo and Addu Atolls, sometimes known as the Southern Atolls, when they arrive at empty surf break after empty surf break in the Maldives. Even though it may not be completely deserted, there are less surf boats and surf charters operating here than in the Northern Atolls, so even the busiest locations are less crowded.
Due to its complete southerly orientation and openness, the atoll enjoys a double exposure to both the south east and south west. This guarantees a significantly higher frequency of surfing days than in any other surf spots in the Maldives. Many people compare the waves in this region of the Maldives to those of the Mentawais islands in Indonesia because they are of a higher caliber and power than those in the more upright atolls.
Expect to find a wide range of reef breaks that range in difficulty from hollow, sucking dry pits to very mellow and fun shreddable walls. The majority of surfs will also have severe rips because reef crossings are heavily influenced by tides.
The ideal approach to surfing in this area is by boat charter due to the high density of breakers within a short radius.
Waves in Southern Atolls:
Huvadhoo Atoll: Tiger Stripes, Love Charm, Two Ways, Five Islands, Blue Bowls, Beacons, Viligili
Addu Atoll: Kottey, Shangri-La, Madihera, Approach Lights
Two of the Maldives' most well-known waves, Beacons and Tiger Stripes, are said to be among the most potent in the world. They crash quickly and violently onto a shallow, fringed reef, which is a characteristic of southern surf sites.
Best time to surf in Southern Atolls:
The Southern Atolls have a longer surf season that begins in early February and lasts until November because they are more exposed to the far Southern groundswells. Prime swell periods, however, are from March through May and September through October due to the wind conditions. Although the Southern Atolls also receive the highest swell during the Maldives traditional peak swell season from May to August, the wind blows strong and onshore, so the best options will likely be lucky "in between" days or less-surfed areas.
Surfing level:
Only recommended for surfers at the Advanced level.
